Dr. Mario Mauthe is an assistant professor at the University Medical Center in Groningen, the Netherlands. 
His research focuses on autophagy, the body’s natural process of cleaning out damaged cells in order to regenerate healthier cells.  In particular, his research focuses on studying the role of autophagy in neurological diseases, such as Huntington’s disease and BPAN . 
Mario trained as a molecular cell biologist at the University of Tuebingen (Germany). After earning his doctorate from the school in 2013, he joined the team of Prof. Dr. Fulvio Reggiori (Department of Cell Biology, UMC Utrecht and UMC Groningen) before he joined the group of Prof. Dr. Harrie Kampinga where he is currently working. He is a member of The German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Women in Autophagy network and board member of the Nordic Autophagy Society and works with the Expertise Center for Movement Disorders, Groningen.
